Arun Kumar Shukla is a mining engineer with more than 38 years of experience in the Indian Mining Industry. His extensive background includes expertise in stakeholder management, administration, governance, and sustainable mining practices. He obtained his B.Tech. in Mining Engineering and M.Tech. in Environmental Engineering from IIT (ISM), Dhanbad, along with a bachelor’s degree in law from Ranchi University. Mr. Shukla possesses First Class Mines Managers’ Certificate of Competency.

After his superannuation as Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of Hindustan Copper Limited (HCL) in July 2023, he is currently associated with NMDC Limited as an Advisor. He held the position of CMD, HCL from January 2020 to July 2023. Before joining HCL in 2018 as Director (Operations), he had been affiliated with major CPSUs of India, including Coal India Limited for 21 years and NMDC Limited for 12 years. During his tenure with NMDC, he also held the position of Managing Director of Jharkhand State Mineral Development Corporation Ltd (on deputation).

Mr. Shukla is a recipient of various awards including the prestigious Life Time Achievement Award (2022-23), by Indian Society for Training & Development (ISTD) for his contribution in the field of Learning & Development; MGMI Award of Excellence for the Non-Coal mining Sector (2021-22) for outstanding contribution in non-coal mining industry; FIMI Golden Jubilee Award for Excellence (2016-17) and TATA STEEL Mining Sustainability Award (2017-18) for significant contribution towards sustainable mining.    

He is an active member of various professional bodies such as IEI, FIMI, MGMI, MEAI, ISTD, NIPM, and a regular contributor to technical journals, business magazines, and national and international conferences. Mr. Shukla was also featured in the book “100 Great IITians: Dedicated to the Service of Nation” published in February 2024. He was honoured for “Extraordinary Contribution to Mineral and Mining Industry by Mining Engineering Association of India at their National Conference held in Hyderabad in February 2025.
