Ph.D in Law

Chotanagpur Law College, Ranchi offers a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Law Programme to promote advanced legal research, innovation, and academic excellence. The Programme is designed to develop independent researchers capable of contributing to legal scholarship, public policy, judicial reforms, and interdisciplinary studies. The Ph.D. Programme provides a rigorous research environment under the guidance of recognized Research Supervisors, enabling scholars to undertake original and high-quality research in diverse areas of law.

The Programme is conducted in accordance with the provisions of the University Grants Commission (UGC) Regulations on the Award of Ph.D. Degree, the applicable University Ordinances, and other statutory guidelines as amended from time to time.

Eligibility for Admission

  1. 1. Candidates must possess a Master's Degree in Law (LL.M.) or an equivalent Postgraduate Degree recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) with at least Fifty-Five Percent (55%) marks or an equivalent grade.
  2. 2. A relaxation of Five Percent (5%) marks, or its equivalent grade, shall be applicable to candidates belonging to SC/ST/OBC (Non-Creamy Layer)/Differently-Abled (PwD)/EWS categories, as per the applicable UGC Regulations and Government norms.
  3. 3. Candidates who have qualified UGC-NET/JRF, UGC-CSIR NET/JRF, or any other examination recognized by the UGC for Ph.D. admission may be considered in accordance with the prevailing Regulations.

Mode of Admission

  • 1. Admission through the Research Entrance Test (RET) conducted by the College/University; or
  • 2. Exemption from the Entrance Test shall be available to candidates as provided under the applicable UGC Regulations and University Ordinances.
  • 3. Final selection shall be based on performance in the Entrance Test (where applicable), Research Proposal Presentation, Personal Interview/Viva-Voce, verification of documents, and fulfillment of the prescribed eligibility criteria.

Duration of the Programme

The minimum duration of the Ph.D. Programme shall be Three (3) Years, including Course Work, from the date of admission, and the maximum duration shall be as prescribed under the applicable UGC Regulations and University Ordinances.

Every Research Scholar shall successfully complete the prescribed Course Work, submit progress reports periodically, undertake original research under the supervision of a recognized Research Supervisor, and submit a thesis embodying original research contributions.

The Degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) shall be awarded upon successful completion of all academic and research requirements, evaluation of the thesis, and successful defence in the Viva-Voce Examination, in accordance with the applicable UGC Regulations, University Ordinances, and other statutory provisions.
