Biographical Sketch

Prof. Uday Shankar is Associate Professor at Rajiv Gandhi School of Intellectual Property Law, IIT Kharagpur. He served as a Registrar (Professor of Law) at Hidayatullah National Law University for 2 years (2021-2023) while being on lien from IIT Kharagpur. He has been teaching and researching in law for more than 20 years. Currently , he is holding the position of Associate Dean Students' Wellbeing at IIT Kharagpur. In the year 2024, he has received visiting fellowship from the University of Macerata, Italy in the year 2024. He has served as guest professor under Magdalene Schoch Fellowship awarded by the Faculty of Law, University of Hamburg in the year 2016 and recipient of the prestigious fellowship from the Max-Planck Institute of Comparative Public Law and International Law, Heidelberg in the year 2008.


He a Member of Scientific Committee of the Global Pandemic Network, the Legal, Policy and Pandemics (the Journal of Global Pandemic Network) and Country Coordinator (India) of Global Pandemic Network and active member of the Global Pandemic Network Working Groups. He is a Member of International Association of Constitutional Law (https://www.iacl-aidc.org/en/). He is a Life Member of Indian Law Institute, Delhi.


He has supervised doctoral thesis in the areas of Constitutional Law, Sustainable Development, Data Protection and Privacy, Energy Law and Policy and Green Technologies for Smart Cities.


More than 60 of his academic writings are published in journals and books. He has authored a book and edited four books. The recent edited book is ‘Human Rights during Covid 19: South Asian Perspective’ published by Springer Nature. He has presented papers and delivered invited talks in more than 80 conferences in India and abroad.


He delivers lecture as a resource person in Faculty Development Programme/Conferences in the area of Constitutional Law/Energy Law/Research Methodology/Teaching Pedagogy. His three online courses namely Introduction to Law on Electricity, Centre-State Relations in India and Directive Principles of State Policy and Fundamental Duties: Constitutional Imperatives are offered under the scheme of National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning (NPTEL), project funded by the Ministry of Education, Government of India. He has organized GIAN (Global Academic of Academic Networks) Course on Energy Law and Policy and Short Term Courses on Labour Law and Make in India/Skill India.


He has done research projects in the area of Energy Law, Transport Law/Access to Justice funded by the Government of India and international organization. He sits on the editorial boards or advisory boards of journals published by the National Law Universities/Law Colleges in India.
